January recap

January wasn't a very interesting month for me- at least on a personal level!

I started my job on the 7th, so all my weekdays were busy with work, and the weekends were spent doing other important things!

Here's what I managed to squeeze in:

Movies
Pitch Perfect [2012]
Lincoln [2012]
Django Unchained [2012]
Hyde Park on Hudson [2012]
Zero Dark Thirty [2012]
Les Miserables [2012]

Books  2 (Love Unscripted, The Ice Age- Kirsten Reed)

Here's to hoping February will be more active and interesting on a personal level! Maybe I can get to a theater play, like I've wanted for a long time, and see more movies, too.

Have a great month, lovely people!

December recap & Resolutions

December was quite an eventful month, so I didn't get to see that many movies- I wanted to read more, so I focused on that. Here's a short recap:

Movies 5
Silver linings playbook [2012]
Beasts of the southern wild [2012]
Amour [2012]
Perks of being a wallflower [2012]
Sideways [2004]

Books 5

Now that we're very close to the end of 2012, I decided to re-check my 2012 resolutions that I set at the very beginning of the year. Here they are, plus my FAIL/SUCCESS markings.

1. Watch at least 150 movies- FAIL 125 movies seen

2. Out of those 150, at least 60 will have been released before 2010- SUCCESS 60 before 2010 :)

3. At least 15 will be foreign movies- SUCCESS 15 foreign films seen :)

4. Review or summarize/write about every movie I see- SUCCESS I have a 90% rate, that qualifies for green, right?

5. Do 2 marathons based on a director's portfolio- SUCCESS I did, on Coen brothers and a little bit on Paul Thomas Anderson and Cronenberg

6. Mantain my 18 posts/month for the blog-  FAIL, especially during the second part of the year

7. Have more then 20.000 views by the end of the year 2012- SUCCESS just surpassed 50.000

8. Rely less on piracy and more on cinema and festival viewings- SUCCESS, although I can definitely do better

9. Improve my writing (Longer reviews, with more depth and a better vocabulary)- SUCCESS i really do think I have improved, but you are the best judge to that

10. Diversity for the blog posts  (more essays, special features, monthly round-up etc)- FAIL I need to work on this one

I am happy to see so many SUCCESS marks and I hope next year I can say the same! Check back tomorrow for my 2013 resolutions!

Until then, I wish you a fantastic New Year, full of happiness, accomplishments and fun times!

p.s. Did you have resolutions? how many did you tick off?

November recap

I really don't know how November passed so quickly...again! It just seems like time is running out, hurrying to get somewhere and is not stopping for anyone. Maybe I am just getting older!

Anyway, November, for me, was...uneventful! I did do a lot of reading and spend some days at the mountain side, where I relaxed, but no big developments, although I am now involved in an interesting project! At least I know the second half of December will be interesting!

Before we enter the month of snow, presents and carols, here's my list for November:

Movies 10
James Bond 007: Skyfall [2012]
Like Crazy [2011]
Argo [2012]
Expendables [2010]
Sound of my voice [2011]
Breaking Dawn 1 [2011]- re-watch
Breaking Dawn 2 [2012]
Ruby Sparks [2012]
The Mask of Zorro [1998] re-watch
Cloud Atlas [2012]

Books 10 (The Mortal Instruments series- 5 books, The Infernal Devices series- 2 books, and some other infamous, unimportant, rather embarrassing books...but still, all in English, so that must count for something, right?)

What have you been up to? Any plans for December?

I wish you all a lovely day and month!

October recap

October has past, yet again, as fast as the last few months- time is running out and I feel like I am loosing it on useless things. Take October, for example- I was busy almost every day of the month, but I haven't actually accomplished anything important. I did chores for my parents, I met with the some friends, but I didn't get a job or write on the blog.

That's one of the things I regret and feel very bad about: not being too active on the blog, when I had the time. As you can see below, my movie count is shameful, and I hate it. But lately I don't have the mood to either see or write about a film, which is weird, because I used to love it before- I still do, but it's proving to be more difficult to do. God, I am such a lazy person, I need to change things quickly this November, and I will start by making a day by day schedule I will have to keep up with- mandatory tasks regarding job search and movies. I know that if I keep at it, I will definitely reach some of my goals- I am an organized person, but I also need motivation to get things done, and that's hard to have sometimes. But no, I am determined to have a much more productive November. Focus Diana! :)

Anyway, let's stop whining and start November on a much better vibe. Until then, here's my very short list for October:

Movies
ParaNorman [2012]
Devil wears Prada [2006] re-watch
Traffic [2000]
4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days [2007]
Children of Men [2007]
Beyond the Hills [2012]

Books 2

How were you this month? lazy, active, did anything interesting?

September recap

This September started off very strong, but dosed off after the first week. Let me explain why: I handed it my dissertation on the 30th of August, then, from the 1st of September, I think, I got to participate the Fall Preview organised by the Film Distributors' Association, where I got to watch a lot of great movies. 15 out of the 16 viewed this month were because of this event.

After 4 days of intense film viewing, I packed by bags and went back home to Bucharest- I was sad to leave London, it wasn't actually by choice. Anyway, the next 3 weeks were spent adjusting to the new life and my time and mood for movies were practically nonexistent  but thank God I have a good final balance, and I have to thank the London event for it :)

Anyway, here's the list!

Movies 16
Madagascar 3 [2012]
Hope Springs [2012]
The Knot [2012]
Private Peaceful [2012]
Holy Motors [2012]
Anna Karenina [2012]
The Sweeney [2012]
Untouchable [2011]
Sister [2012]
Rust and Bone [2012]
End of watch [2012]
Frankenweenie [2012]
Lawless [2012]
Sightseers [2012]
Now is good [2012]
The Apartment [1960]

Books Sadly, I haven't had time to finish any books this month :( Hopefully, I'll be more successful the next one!

As usual, I ended disappointed in my September, but I'm not going to promise or hope for a better month- que sera, sera! :)

What did you do/see/read this September? anything good?

August recap

Hello lovely blog friends,

August is gone- honestly, how did it fly by so fast?- and so, fall is here.

As you know, I was MIA for some time because of my dissertation and now I can proudly say that I have finished it, submitted and can call myself a happy unemployed girl, not student anymore :)

Unfortunately, I didn't have as much luck with my job hunt, so I have to go back home to Bucharest, Romania in a couple of weeks, and I am rather sad about it- London is a fantastic city and I feel like I belong here, more than my hometown. But life goes on, and so will I- I'm sure there are a number of great opportunities waiting for me there, as well.

You'll still love me even if I'm not in London anymore, right? :)

Anyway, moving on to the very short recap of the month:

Movies
Vera Drake [2004]
Garden State [2004]
Searching for Sugar Man [2012]
Submarine [2011]
On the road [2012]
Dirty Dancing [1987]- for the 1000th time
Moulin Rouge [2001]
Brave [2012]

Books 2 (YA novel, Looking for Alaska)

I have some serious catching up to do if I am going to resolve my New Year Resolutions, I better get on it.

September looks like a much more interesting, free month for me and I plan to read, write and watch a lot of things, now that I have officially ended my academic journey.

I hope you all have a great month!

Diana

p.s. In a couple of days, Aziza's Picks turns one year old :D happy times, gonna celebrate with an interesting, revealing post, I hope!

July recap

I can honestly admit that I have no idea what I did this month- I literally just lost 31 days doing almost nothing, I don't know where it went! Did you ever have that feeling? If I could kick myself in the ass, I would- stupid Diana! Anyway, here's the breakdown:

Movies
Atonement [2007]
American Psycho [2000]
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus [2009]
Magic Mike [2012]
Spirited away [2001]
Almost Famous [2001]
Gentlemen prefer blondes [1953]
That thing you do! [1996]
The Dark Knight Rises [2012]
Earrings [2012] :)
The Full Monty [1997]

Books 1 (The five people you meet in heaven- lovely book that I recommend)

Concerts- Charlotte Gainsbourg

August is going to be a crucial month for me for two reasons:
- I have to successfully finish my dissertation
- I have to find a paid job [if I don't get one, it's bye bye London for me and hello Bucharest, and it's not something I want]

Let's hope everything will be OK and by the beginning of September most of things would have been resolved!

I really hope you had a better July than me! anything interesting happen to you?

June recap

June was a pretty good month for me- I am pretty satisfied with what I saw, plus I got to witness two great live music events and I read more than usual, but I won't divulge the titles, as they are pretty embarrassing (let's just say that they helped me develop my English level, OK? they were bad, but useful in some way). On the academic side (I have to write a dissertation by the end of August) the situation is absolutely horrific, as I tend to be the world best procrastinator, but I hope and actually, I have to work ten times harder in July for it, so pray for me and my general laziness :) Did I tell you last month that I was looking for a job? Well, I got one :) it's an unpaid internships, but still, it's experience and I am learning things...I mean, I hope so, anyway!

Anyway, here's the list for June

Movies
Lolita [1997]
Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging [2008]
Guess who's coming to dinner [1967]
Friends with Kids [2012]
Schindler's list [1993]
Chinatown [1974]
The Hours [2002]
Frankenstein [2011] *
Rock of Ages [2012]
When Harry met Sally [1989]
Love sick aka Legaturi Bolnavicioase [2006]

*Frankenstein is a 2011 National Theater Live production, a play directed by Danny Boyle who was broadcast ed live in numerous cinemas across UK. Because of its success, this summer they decided to have some encore screenings in cinemas all around the country

Books: 5 (I will just mention "The Fault in our stars" by John Green, just because it was a good book and I love the author's style and the voice it gives to the characters)

Concerts
- The Maccabees at Alexandra Palace, London- one of the best gigs of my life (and yes, I know I might be biased because I love them so much). Surrounded by teenagers in the third row, when the band came on stage I was pushed into a mosh pit at the beginning of the show (half of time I was screaming and dancing with the others, the other half I was trying to breathe and get out of there), but I escaped the death zone after a couple of songs and managed to thoroughly enjoy the rest of the show, which was amazing! Give them a listen, if you haven't already!
- BBC Hackney Weekend- I was there on Saturday and saw a lot of amazing artists, like Emeli Sande, Deadmau5, The Maccabees, The Vaccines, Kasabian, Jack White and Jay Z. Fantastic day!

That's all for June! I am hoping for a more academic-oriented July and more trips to the cinema, as there are some great films coming up this month!

What do you hope to do in July?

May recap

May was a pretty good month for me. I finally finished all my projects and essays for university and successfully turned them in, and now I just have to focus on my dissertation. After that stressful beginning of the month, I went back home for a week and a half and enjoyed spending time with my family and some close friends, while my mom spoiled me and fed me like there was no tomorrow :) Now I am back in London, ready to rumble, do my research and find a job. I need a job/work experience/internship/anything to do this summer, otherwise I will go crazy!
[Side note: lovely London people, what do I have to do to get into the press screenings? can I or is it too early to do it? help please?]

As for actual movies I saw this month, I am happy to check some important titles I've been meaning to see for months (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, City Lights and so on).

Here's the list for May:

Movies:
Young Adult [2011]
City Lights [1931]
Some Like It Hot [1959]
Coco avant Chanel [2009] foreign film
Taxi Driver [1976]
Raging Bull[1980]
The Virgin Suicides [1999]
Le Scaphandre et le Papillon [2007] foreign film
Big Fish [2003]
Moonrise Kingdom [2012]
Brief Encounter [1945]

Books: 1

I also participated in some very cool blogathons
- Nostra's The Ten: Best actors of all time- my pick
and
- Duke&the movies' Representing Humanity- my choices

Next month:
- 2 concerts (Maccabees and BBC Hackney Weekend)
- Viewing of Frankestein, the Danny Boyle theater play that he directed, starting Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller, which also was broadcast live across the UK, and now it's being re-introduced to some select theaters. Just so there are no confusions: I am going to see it in the cinema theater, so no, unfortunately, I won't see Cumberbatch in person, but he will be on a huge screen in front of me, and I am fine with that :)
- Diamond Jubilee parties
- Tate Museum visit
...and hopefully, many more interesting things!

Have a great June everyone!

April recap

If I had to choose one word to describe this month, it would probably be LAZY or maybe PROCRASTINATION. I started April with an intense 3 days of projects and then proceeded to be in a 3 weeks Spring Break which led to me doing almost nothing, except listen to music (mostly Maccabees, my current obsession) and, from time to time, read books and magazines.

I feel like I wasted a perfectly good month, and so, I hope May will be better (although I don't have high hopes for it, either, as I will be travelling back home for 2 weeks).

Anyway, here's my too short list of things I've done this month:

Movies:
Once [2006]
Usual Suspects [1995]
The Godfather 1 [1972]
The Godfather 2 [1974]
Fish Tank [2009]
Taking Woodstock [2009]
Avengers Assemble [2012]
Sense&Sensibility [1995]

Books: 4

Opera: 1 (Rigoletto at the Royal Opera Covent Garden)

Event: Sundance London Future Filmmakers

I couldn't end this April recap without a little...

March recap

Every month I read my fellow bloggers posts and am shocked by the numbers of the movies they see, but most of all, I am a bit ashamed- I watch only 12-13 movies per month and I call myself a movie blogger?

I just decided to not that think about it- I prefer to watch movies in my own pace and to not be rushed. If I can only do 13 per month, I am ok with it. Plus, these posts are just a way for me to keep track of what I've done throughout the year, so I can see if I accomplised my resolutions!

Anyway, this month was ok (better than February)- I got to read, to go to an amazing concert, discover new music (Maccabees) and book tickets for a fantastic music festival that just happens to be FREE (with an exception of a fee of 2.50 pounds fee, which is nothing- equivalent of 3 cans of Cokes)- BBC Hackney Weekend. Moviewise, I did two mini marathons: one of David Cronenberg films, and the other about the Coen Brothers features.

Here's the list:

Movies
Control[2007]
A history or violence [2005]
Eastern Promises [2007]
A dangerous method [2011]
The Big Lebowski[1998]
Fargo[1996]
A serious man [2009]
True Grit [2010]
Little Miss Sunshine [2006]
Hunger Games [2012]
There will be blood [2007]
Magnolia [1999]
Weekend [2011]

Books: 2

Concerts: Florence and the Machine

I'll have 3 weeks of Spring Break in April, and I am planning to be a busy girl and take advantage of the city, the library, my movie collection and the internet.

Hope you all have a good month!

p.s Am I the only one who hates April 1st and all the joke mania around it! Never liked it, especially in school!

January recap

January has been a good month for me, but I wish I would have done more and seen more movies. You'll see I like to count and take into consideration more cultural aspects of my previous month, so you'll get the numbers for TV shows, books, audiobooks, and other similar interesting experiences. I am going to start counting BBC series as movies, because the length and quality of the story and production fit into a movie category, from my point of view.

Film&TV shows:
Animal Kingdom[2010]
L'amour fou[2010] documentary
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo[2011]
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy[2011]
Bill Cunningham New York[2010] documentary
Shame[2011/2012]
War Horse[2011/2012]
The Artist[2011/2012]
Sherlock[2011-2012]- BBC series- seasons 1&2
The Skin I live in [2011]
A separation [2011]
Birdsong- BBC series [2012]
Sirens- Channel 4 series [2011]

Extra: Misfits season 3 [2011] - all night marathon at a local cinema theatre (a great experience and very cool TV show)

Books: 3
Audiobook: 1 "Casanova" read by Benedict Cumberbatch- the voice that man has....wow!

New blogs I discovered (you should check them out)
Sati at Cinematic Corner
http://iluvcinema.com/
Wilde Dash- she has her own music blog http://popcandyarcade.blogspot.com/, showcasing great and new music to me, but also contributes to the film blog http://www.loveandsqualorfilm.com, which is very good!

Oh, and I just surpassed 5000 views on the blog- crazy! :)

I hope you all had a great January and I wish February will be even better for all of us!

November recap

This past month has been very interesting, as I had the pleasure of experiencing different cultural activities- some for the first time, some not, but still wonderful! That, mixed with hard work for the media course I am taking, I can call it a full month! But still, my movie count is embarrasingly low, and yet again, I will promise to work harder in December- I will have the time for it!

So here is what I did this November! Let the counting begin!

Firsts: RHCP concert-a dream came true, it was fantastic and did not dissapoint; musical (Mamma Mia); Chinatown all-you-can-eat buffet-- random, I know, but still great

Movies: Thin Red Line, Passion of Christ, V for Vendetta, Melancholia, Persona, Capote, Infamous, Chicago, The Help, Breaking Dawn, Remember me, Warrior, My week with Marilyn

Documentaries: Life in a Day

Books: 2 (no classics, nothing interesting) P.S. I am planning to attack Les Miserables during Christmas break, wish me luck!

TV shows: finished 2 seasons of Friday Night Lights and watched a bunch of new episodes of different shows

Concerts: 2- Red Hot Chilli Peppers
                 - Emil Kusturica and the No Smoking Band

Musical: Mamma Mia

And I couldn't end without some special mentions for posts and articles

Charles Taylor wrote a very interesting article about film criticism in the Dissent Magazine

Andy's epic post on Thin Red Line vs Saving Private Ryan- wonderful analysis of both movies

A beginner's guide to Ingmar Bergman, courtesy of Tyler

Alex gives a beautiful, moving review to Hugo

Very interesting post about the Blogger Syndrome -courtesy of Ticker Talks Film

Scott talks about his big weekend and 3 great films

Being Norma Jeans had a grea recap of this years' best posters

Movienut14 is one of my favourite persons on Twitter, but her blog is even better. She recently wrote about a film I have been dying to see for the last year

Max has a great website, not only of reviews, but film news and trailers. I always check it and you should, too. The descendants review is great, as usual

Ruth from Flix Chatter is as confused as I was when I saw Tree of Life

December is going to be a good month- more time to watch movies, finally going home for Christmas, plus some great posts I have planned for the blog, the first one dropping tomorrow! Thank you! Stay tunned!

p.s 3 months of blogging- you know what that means, right? LAMB, get ready for my application!

Oct 31, 2011

October- the essentials

Hey,

Autumn is here, October has past and it was a great month for me, since I got to watch a lot of interesting movies at the London Film Festival!

Inspired by the great Andy Buckle(who watched 41 movies this month only), I decided I should give a short recap of what I've seen in October plus some few honorable mentions of great blog posts!

In cinemas: Crazy Stupid Love, The machine that kills bad people+A trip to the moon(in colour), 50/50, Restless, Carnage, Take Shelter, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Miss Bala, Ides of March, An American in Paris

At home(DVD or other illegal sources:): Bicycle thieves, Another Earth, Let me in

All in all, for October, JUST 13 movies! Dissapointing, I know! But hey, in my defense, I am post-graduate student with classes and essays to turn in, so cut me some slack!

I've also squeezed in some TV, mainly 30 rock, Castle and some episodes of The Good Wife, Grey's Anatomy and Supernatural!

This month I've been much more active on my blog, but also reading and posting on other blogs. I have discovered some great ones, I have constantly viewed others, and here are some honorable mentions:

Nikhat from Being Norma Jean has one of the most colourful, funny blogs out there. I love the fact that everytime I open her blog, I always discover a new, great song. Also, her Thoughts posts, like this one, for example, are very good!

Alex from And so it begins has been on my watch list almost every day. I love his style, his posts and it doesn't hurt that we have similar opinions and tastes in film-sometimes, not always. Two honorable mentions for him:  10 best criterion DVD covers and his new series, In character. P.S. Does Paul Bettany qualify for that? He is great!

Similar situation with Andy Buckle- great blog, very useful, always updated, the best reviews  (have to admire his passion for films). This month, his classic throwback gets an honorable mention

I can relate to the lovely Ruth, as university has been taking up some of my time, as well, so this post was interesting. Keep up the good work!

I always check CS's  Sharing the Blogging Love posts, hoping I am there (I had that honour a couple of weeks before, when I reviewed Revolutionary Road and it made me so happy, for some unknown reason). Also, I try to comment on the Which is better? series, like this one.

FlixChatter.net is a wonderful new blog I discovered a couple of days ago thanks to this post dedicated to one my favorites, Rufus Sewell!

Scott from Front Door Cinema has two lovely daughters that remind me of my nephews and an awesome blog, to top that. He is going to re-watch Shame in his local film festival- I am very jealous of him because of that- and, go figure, he also has DVD giveaways (hint: I have never won on these kind of competitions; hint2: Sin City would look so good in my DVD collection). A lot of love for him for always trying to comment on each post!

Phil on film has done an extensive LFF coverage, but I love this interview with the star and director of Miss Bala.

Bonjour Tristesse has such a wonderful blog and great writing style, that I always feel guilty that I can't really comment on her post- I don't watch a lot of international movies, unfortunately. This week, she did a similar post about the month of October and I am very happy to be there, on her list!

Tyler from Southern Vision always makes me feel like a kindergarden girl when it comes to movies- his knowledge on films is fantastic and I hope I'll get there someday! Interesting post right here!

Another great thing: my blog stats are off the charts! I remember on the 1st of October I had 300 something views, and now I have around 800. It's crazy!

Thank you guys for all of the support!

Hoping for a great November, full of interesting movies!
