Can you recommend me...?

Hey there lovely blog readers,

How's your day going?

Mine is fine, a little bit melancholic because of the grey, rainy weather, but otherwise, pretty good.

As you might remember, I endeavor to write a Recommendations post every month, with the music, books, magazines and/or websites I like at the moment. Now, I am writing to you with a small request. Can you recommend me some things? Like, for example:

- What are your favorite all-time and/or current documentaries?
- Best/most interesting music films/documentaries? (bands, artists, music movements, events, concerts etc)
- Do you know any good websites, if not, books, to help me learn Guitar (acoustic) by myself?
- What are your favorite non-film related blogs out there? I'm also looking for lifestyle or analytical/essay type of blogs, you know, with real people and real thoughts, not necessarily cultural related

I am looking forward to your suggestions and I thank you in advance!

I hope you have a great day!
Diana

  1. Oooh, boy! *rubs hands* Here we go!

Some of my favourite docos include THE THIN BLUE LINE, WALTZ WITH BASHIR (I count that as a doco, though maybe others wouldn't), FOR ALL MANKIND, and IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON.

Music doco-wise, I haven't seen a lot, but I've seen DON'T LOOK BACK about Bob Dylan, and it's pretty good!

Guitar wise, can't help you :/ I know there are tutorials on youtube, but that's about it (and I'm not sure how helpful they are)

Hmm...non-film blogs...again, I couldn't really say! I mostly read all you lovely film bloggers, or just browse random images on Tumblr!

The Filth & the Fury and Westway to the World are music docs I recommend. I also would check out Cracked Actor about David Bowie's post-Ziggy Stardust life as he's struggling with cocaine addiction.

For some reason I am totally stumped at the moment but check out the next response I have a few music ones.

Marley is in my DVR queue. really looking forward to it
I saw The Russian Winter (about John Forte) at Tribeca - pretty interesting
Over 10 yrs ago caught this BBC doc narrated by Clive Owen called: "Walk on By: The Story of Popular Song"

  9. - What are your favorite all-time and/or current documentaries?
Unknown White Male is my favorite documentary. It's about a guy who suffers a rare form of amnesia. Utterly fascinating and thought-provoking. This one deserves more attention than it tends to get. Some other more popular choices would be Grizzly Man, Anvil!: The Story of Anvil, Man on Wire, The Cove, Senna, March of the Penguins, etc..

    - Best/most interesting music films/documentaries? (bands, artists, music movements, events, concerts etc)
I've already mentioned Anvil. That one's at the top for me. Some Kind of Monster is also quite interesting. And then there's Air Guitar Nation, which is very fluff but oh so fun.

  11. Check out thebloggess.com, she's hilarious (NYTimes bestseller now!) but also talks openly about her struggle with depression.

As for documentaries.. I'm a big fan of the Stargate special features about how aliens built the pyramids ;)

  12. Recommended documentaries: Hoop Dreams is the best documentary ever made. Period. Both Siskel and Ebert independently named it their top film of 1994, which was itself a hell of a year for movies (Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, etc.) Other good docs are The Way We Get By (could be hard to find), The Thin Blue Line, and for some fun The King of Kong.

Recommended music films: Stop Making Sense is the best concert film. Woodstock, of course, is very well known. Chess in Concert from London was far better than I was expecting.
