Film or TV?

Lately, I have been torn between two worlds: film and TV!

Although I love films and I hope to work in the industry soon, I almost always get dragged back to a TV show- maybe because it's shorter, maybe because it's something I am familiar with and I know the characters, maybe just because it makes me happy without even having to think too much about it! It's not as complex as a movie, but the story usually is real or attractive to a normal person, without being a masterpiece! I like the fact that you don't need to think too much about the editing or cinematography or the direction, you just go with the flow and follow the characters into that specific world! I consider them to be my guilty pleasures and I don't proclaim my love at loud, but I like shows like Game of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy, Supernatural, Criminal Minds,  The Good Wife, Castle, sometimes Grey's Anatomy, True Blood or Hawaii Five-o.

You probably don't know, but I can say that I much bigger fan of TV than films, but I am trying to change that!

I keep saying to myself- you have so many films you need to see, to understand, you have a film blog (wake up), but I constantly find the excuse that an episode doesn't last that long and that I will find time for some personal issues, as well (university work and so on). My fascination for films and film making is growing stronger day by day, but I can't find the time or the mood, to say so, to watch any!

So, were you ever in my situation? What did you do or what do you normally choose? If you do watch TV, what are you favourite shows?

  1. I know the feeling, sometimes when you're tired its easier to concentrate on a shorter tv-show. I haven't followed too many new shows, watched quite a bit of TV when I was younger. Though I do watch a few, among others, saw The Office both US and UK, and the spin-off parks and recreations is funny too.
As you can see, I like comedy, in fact I think comedy in a lot of cases is more suitable for tv and 30 min episodes.

  2. There are some who believe that TV is just a high an art form as cinema - the idea of 'quality TV' is quite prevalent and shows like True Blood are considered 'quality' (basically anything that comes out of HBO!) Nothing to be ashamed about in liking TV more than film - one of the courses I'm doing at the moment is Television Cultures and its the whole idea of TV becoming a 'legitimate' art form :) I think working in TV is fun as!

  3. @movieandsongs365: I love comedy, as well! i'm currently halfway through the 3rd season of 30 rock! Tina Fey is amazing!

@Ruth: I agree, I think working in TV is much more fun and exciting and also, that HBO is creating some great shows. Not only because they have the resources to do it, but also because they give freedom to their writers and directors and are willing to try everything!

  4. i watch way too much tv in my own opinion but sometimes it's fun to just put a show on for an hour and go to sleep rather than interrupt a movie half way through.

i'm sort of anti watching a film in multiple viewings rather than all in one sitting but it works and gets you watching more movies.

  5. I know what you mean Toby, I rather watch a 45 minutes show, then go to bed!

I, too, prefer to see a movie in one viewing! If I leave it for another time, I rarely come back to it!

  6. if you're a film student you should probably work on improving that though. obviously you know this already. you can only learn from seeing as many films as possible in my opinion.

  8. I have completely abandoned my television viewing over the last few months, though I have squeezed in Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage. I do love good TV (HBO - Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, The Wire, OZ etc) but if get too caught up with television, I have no time for film, which is my primary interest.

I do re-watch a lot of Seinfeld and Arrested Development, though. But they only run for 20-22 minutes, and great for many a late night laugh.

I understand exactly what you mean Aziza.

  9. I can't name a show I've been watching regularly, at all :/ Uni gets in the way of things. Even my beloved Doctor Who has fallen victim! Just got introduced to One Born Every Minute in a lecture today, and the second season starts next Wednesday - the same day I'm at RMITV studios! Grr...will have to record it methinks.

  11. hey there :) I don't think you can really separate both. if you love movies, then it's no surprise if you love TV-shows. both just have different formats. I love both, I wouldn't give up any of them because I'll always get back to them when I need them. so I think it's fine to have both
